वह दोनों हाथों से एक अकेला लंबा दंड पकड़े है, एक मुट्ठी ऊपर बाईं ओर ऊँची उठी, दूसरी दाहिनी ओर नीचे, इस प्रकार कि दंड उसकी छाती के आर-पार तिरछा जाता है। उसके ऊपरी सिरे के पास छोटी पत्तियाँ फूटी हैं।

He grips a single long wand in both hands, one fist raised high at the upper left, the other low at the right, so the staff runs diagonally across his chest. Small leaves sprout near its upper end.

Full commitment of the will. Two hands on one wand mean nothing is held back. The diagonal is a guard: it blocks, parries and keeps the others at a distance. One clear purpose is his defence against many scattered ones.

उसका एक दंड और नीचे के छह मिलकर सात होते हैं, कार्ड की संख्या। एक छह का सामना करता है। अकेला उद्देश्य अनेक का।

His one wand and six below make seven, the number of the card. One faces six, and the single purpose faces the many.

His head is turned to the right and tilted down, brows drawn, eyes fixed on the wands rising below him. His expression is one of concentration, with no fear in it.

Attention under pressure. He watches the challenge directly instead of looking away or looking for rescue. Clear sight of what is coming is half of a good defence.

बौद्धिक स्तर पर वेट इसका अर्थ चर्चा और शाब्दिक विवाद बताते हैं। एकाग्र चेहरा उस वक्ता जैसा है जो एक-एक आपत्ति का उत्तर देता है।

Waite's meaning on the intellectual plane is discussion and wordy strife. The concentrated face suits a debater answering objections one by one.

अनेक दिशाओं से विरोध और दबाव। क्योंकि विरोधी दिखाई नहीं देते, कार्ड प्रतिस्पर्धियों, आलोचकों, प्रतिद्वंद्वी बोलियों, या केवल उन अनेक माँगों का वर्णन कर सकता है जो सफल हुए व्यक्ति के विरुद्ध उठती हैं। उनके दंड भी जीवित हैं, और चुनौती सच्ची है।

Opposition and pressure from many sides. Because the opponents are unseen, the card can describe competitors, critics, rival bids, or simply the many demands that rise against a person who has succeeded. Their wands are alive too, and the challenge is real.

Every one of them reaches up and none reaches him. Waite notes that the combatant is on the top and his enemies may be unable to reach him: the card is also one of success.

On his left-hand foot, as we see it, he wears a low red slipper. On the other is a tall red boot laced to mid-calf. The difference is clear and deliberate in the composition.

तैयारी के बीच पकड़ा गया। कई शिक्षक बेमेल जूतों को ऐसे व्यक्ति का चिह्न मानते हैं जिसे पूरी तरह तैयार होने से पहले रक्षा करनी पड़ी, या जो असमान भूमि पर खड़ा है। वेट इस पर कुछ नहीं कहते। फिर भी यह आधुनिक अर्थ काम का है।

Caught mid-preparation. Many teachers read the mismatched footwear as a person who had to defend before they were fully ready, or who stands on uneven ground. Waite does not comment on it. The modern reading is a useful one all the same.

Courage moves before readiness is perfect. He holds the hill in whatever he happened to be wearing.

The vantage position. Waite stresses that the one has the advantage despite the numbers. In life this is the advantage of experience, reputation, skill or a strong case: earned ground that is easier to hold than to take.

Behind the defender, a clear deep blue sky fills the upper card, with long thin clouds traced in gold drifting at the left and right edges.

Nothing above him. There is no enemy higher than the defender and no storm coming. The only pressure is from below, which means the situation, however busy, is bounded and can be managed.
