शक्ति Strength

The Strength tarot card means power that has learned to be gentle: the fiercest thing in a life quieted by patience. Card VIII shows a woman in white bending over a tawny lion, her bare hands closing its jaws, a lemniscate above her head, a garland from her waist to the lion's neck, and a distant blue mountain. Upright it is courage, compassion and self-mastery. Reversed, the lion is loose or the hands have withdrawn.

Waite is exact about what kind: the card has nothing to do with self-confidence in the ordinary sense, and concerns instead the confidence of those whose strength is God, who have found their refuge in Him. She is the higher nature in its liberation. The lion is the part of her that needed a gentler owner.

Power that circulates without end. The loop has no beginning and crosses itself once; on the Magician that crossing was the adept at his table, and here it is the woman's two hands at the lion's mouth. The strength goes round and returns, which is why she does not tire.

Victory worn as something growing. The Fool had a laurel wreath, the promise of a victory not yet earned; the Chariot has a gold crown with a star; Strength has flowers, because what she has won is alive and must be tended. Her authority is seasonal and she knows it.

In a question about reputation or honours, the wreath says the recognition will be real and will need tending. Reversed, the flowers have wilted because the querent stopped doing the quiet thing that earned them.

The passions mastered without injury. Waite says the only point in which the design differs from the conventional ones is that her beneficent fortitude has already subdued the lion. The work is done; what we see is the holding. Her hands close the jaws, and the lion lets her.

The Magician needed four instruments; the Chariot a wand and a stone car. Strength uses nothing but the hands and the gaze. In a reading this is the method: no pressure, no threat, no clever device, only steady contact kept longer than the fear lasts.

When a querent asks how to handle a frightening person or habit, read the woman's hands. They rest on the lion's jaw and stay there. Steady contact, kept up day after day, does what one show of force cannot. Reversed, the hands have pulled back or closed into fists, and either way the nerve has gone.

Beauty leads the lion here, and no iron is needed. Discipline that is loved holds better than discipline that is feared, and it is lighter to carry.

Waite gives one aspect plainly: the lion signifies the passions, and she who is called Strength is the higher nature in its liberation. The lion is also Leo, the card's sign, and the Fire of its element. Nobody has killed or caged it. A life without the lion would have no heat, so the card keeps the animal and changes who leads.
