An old man seen in profile, facing the left of the card, a long white beard under a grey hood, his eyes lowered toward the lantern and the slope below it. Waite says he blends the idea of the Ancient of Days with the Light of the World.
Attainment. Waite corrects two older readings at once: the Hermit is not, as Court de Gébelin had it, a wise man still in search of truth and justice, nor merely an example of experience. He has arrived, and he holds his lamp up on the height so that others can find the way. The card therefore reads in two directions, as the student who must climb and as the master who has turned round.
He does not look up. The one who has seen the heights turns his attention down to where the climbers are. In a reading this is the mark of a true teacher, whose eyes stay on the student's next step.

With the card upright, ask whether the querent is the climber or the one with the lamp; the question and the surrounding cards will tell you. Reversed, he has stopped looking down at the path, and the student below has been left in the dark.
