तारा The Star

आठ लंबी नोकों वाला एक बड़ा सुनहरा तारा, गहरे नीले आकाश के मध्य में स्त्री के सिर के ठीक ऊपर। वेट आठ किरणों वाले एक विशाल दीप्तिमान तारे का वर्णन करते हैं और उसे ल'एतोआल फ़्लाम्बोयान्त, अर्थात प्रज्वलित तारा, कहते हैं।

A large golden star with eight long points, set at the centre of the deep blue sky directly above the woman's head. Waite describes a great radiant star of eight rays and identifies it with l'étoile flamboyante, the blazing star.

The guiding light that remains when everything built has fallen. The Sun of card XIX blazes and the Tower's lightning strikes. This star shines steadily in the dark and acts on nothing; it gives a direction to walk toward.

Eight is the number of the card in reduction (17 to 8) and the number of Strength in this deck. Many teachers also see balance in every direction in the eight points and call it the star of regeneration, a reading added long after the plate was drawn.

Seven smaller white stars, each also of eight points, set in a loose ring around the great golden one. Waite notes that the lesser stars are of eight rays as well.

The one light reflected in many. Teachers commonly read the seven as the seven classical planets, or as seven centres of the subtle body, each lit by the same source. Either way, the great hope is accompanied by many smaller ones.

White around gold: the pure reflection of a central light. The smaller stars repeat the shape of the great one exactly; they are not lesser in kind, only in size.

In her right hand an earthen jug worked with gold, tipped so that a clear stream falls straight down into the pool, where it spreads in rings among lotus leaves. Waite writes that she pours the Water of Life from two ewers, irrigating sea and land.

Feeling replenished. The pool is the inner life, the emotions and the unconscious, and she gives back to it what it has lost. She does it quietly and never measures the gift. Here the heart is being healed.

White lotuses float on the pool in this painting, open where the water is fed. A flower that rises clean from still water fits a card of renewal after loss.

In her left hand the second jug, poured onto the bank, where the water divides and runs away through the grass and flowers in several rivulets toward the lower edge of the card. On the 1909 plate the rivulets number five.

Practical life watered. The land is the body, the work, the daily world, and the water reaches it through many channels at once. The five rivulets are commonly read as the five senses, each refreshed. The hope on this card irrigates whatever can be planted.

Red, yellow and white blossoms grow thickly along the paths of the water. Where she pours, the ground answers at once.

Her left knee rests on the grassy bank; her right foot reaches out and touches the surface of the pool, sending out small ripples. Waite gives exactly this placing: the left knee on the land and the right foot upon the water.

Grounded intuition. Her weight is on the land, so she is stable; her foot rests on the water, so she is in touch with feeling without sinking into it. Compare Temperance, three cards earlier, where the angel stands upright with a foot in the pool: here the same balance is reached kneeling, in humility.

The foot rests on the surface and does not plunge in. Many teachers see faith in this: the depths are touched, and they hold her up.

At the right a slender tree with dense green leaves and small white blossoms rises to the top of the card, and on its highest branch perches a small blue bird. Waite places a shrub or tree on the right, whereon a bird alights.

Thought that has found a place to rest. The bird is the mind or spirit coming down to settle after flight; the tree is life rooted and growing again. On the 1909 plate many teachers identify the bird as an ibis, sacred to Thoth, the Egyptian god of wisdom and writing.

The tree flowers in white among its green leaves: renewal shown in the plainest natural form, the season turning toward growth.

Behind the woman, green fields and groves roll back to a river and to soft blue-grey hills on the horizon. Waite notes rising ground behind her.

A world restored and spacious. There is no building anywhere near her, no tower and no wall, only open ground and distance. After a time of upheaval, the card shows life with room in it again.
