संयम Temperance

A small golden disc set at the centre of the forehead, above the brows, with the whole head ringed by fine gold rays. Waite places the sign of the sun upon the angel's forehead.

Illuminated mind. A clear light at the seat of judgement does the measuring, and appetite and fear are kept out of it. Whatever is being mixed below is governed from here.

Gold, the colour of the sun and of consciousness made steady. The same gold returns in the cups, so the light on the brow and the vessels in the hands are of one substance.

On the breast of the robe, a square panel edged in gold with a red upward-pointing triangle inside it. Waite calls it the square and triangle of the septenary.

Spirit held within matter. The triangle has three sides and the square four; together they make seven, the septenary. The three of spirit is enclosed in the four of the material world, and neither breaks the other.

The stream runs diagonally across the body, from the higher cup to the lower. Many teachers note that it flows more smoothly than water should, as if obeying a gentler law. Read it as a process that feels effortless because it is unhurried.

One bare foot rests in the shallow pool, sending out small ripples; the other stands on the stony bank among the grass. Waite writes that the angel has one foot upon the earth and one upon the waters, illustrating the nature of the essences.

The practical and the emotional held together. Earth is what can be counted and built; water is feeling, intuition and the unconscious. The angel does not choose one; it keeps weight on both, and that is what makes the stance stable.

Small rings spread from the foot in the water. Even a calm presence moves what it touches, and the card accepts those ripples as part of the work.

Iris is the name of the rainbow messenger of Greek myth, and teachers read the flowers as the bridge between heaven and earth that the angel itself embodies. The rainbow is light mixed into colour: one more image of blending.

From the pool a golden path winds up through green hills to blue mountains on the left, where a great light rises behind the peaks with long rays. Waite writes that a direct path goes up to heights on the horizon, with a great light above through which a crown is vaguely seen.
