The Hermit संन्यासी

His right arm is raised and stretched forward so that the lantern hangs at head height, out in front of him and clear of the cloak. The grey sleeve falls back along the arm; nothing covers the lamp.

Light offered to others. Waite says the only variation from the conventional models is that the lamp is not enveloped partially in the mantle of its bearer. The gesture is the whole argument of the card: what has been found in solitude is held out for others, at the cost of the Hermit's own warmth.

Waite goes out of his way to reject the reading of the Hermit as occult isolation, the sage who hides his light to protect it; he calls that one of the frivolous renderings owed to Éliphas Lévi. The Divine Mysteries, he says, secure their own protection from the unprepared. The lamp can be held out safely.

A six-sided gold lantern with glass panels and a pointed roof, and inside it, in place of a flame, a six-pointed star radiating gold light in every direction. It is the only warm light on a card of indigo and grey. Waite: it is a star which shines in the lantern.

The Hermit did not make this light. A flame is kindled; a star is received. What he carries down the mountain is borrowed from heaven and held at human height, close enough to light one step. The star in the glass is the whole teaching: the teacher carries truth and has no hand in inventing it.

Two triangles interlaced, one pointing up and one down: the sign commonly called the Seal of Solomon, read as the meeting of what is above with what is below. The Hermit's lamp joins the heights he has climbed to the valley he is lighting. The star is on the plate; the Solomon reading is the usual one among teachers.

Gold on indigo. The smallest bright thing on the card, and the thing the whole card is about. In the 1909 scheme gold and yellow are consciousness; here consciousness has been reduced to one point and carried.

A long plain gold staff, taller than the man, gripped in his left hand and planted upright on the snow beside his foot. It runs the full height of the figure, from above the hood to the peak.

Support, and the measured step. The Fool carried a wand with a bundle on it; the Magician raised one to the sky; the Chariot's driver held one as a sceptre. The Hermit leans on his. At the summit, will is used for balance. The staff is the discipline that got him up the mountain, now keeping him steady on it.

The receptive side holds the support; the active side holds out the light. He receives steadiness and gives illumination, which is the right order for anyone who teaches: be held, then hold out.

A long grey hooded cloak worked with small gold motifs and bordered in gold, falling in heavy folds from the hood to the snow. It covers the body entirely; only the face, the lantern hand and the toe of one brown shoe show beneath it.

Grey is wisdom and the unformed in the 1909 scheme, the colour between black and white where judgement lives. The cloak hides the man and shows the light: who the Hermit is matters less than what he carries. Gold is worked into the grey, a wisdom earned and ornamented by the climb.

Lévi's followers took the hood for the Silent and Unknown Philosophy kept from the profane. Waite dismisses this and says the true unknown philosopher of Martinism meant something else: that the Mysteries protect themselves. The hood keeps out the cold, and that is all it is required to do.

The Hermit stands on a summit of white snow, with other snowy ridges rising to the left and right of his feet and dark rock showing through below. The hem of the cloak rests on the snow; there is no path drawn.

The eminence Waite names when he calls this a card of attainment and says the figure is seen holding up his beacon on a height. The Fool saw these peaks in the distance; the Hermit stands on them. The summit is cold, clean and lonely, and it is reached by the discipline the staff represents. Nobody is given it.

White snow against the indigo night: purity at an altitude where little grows. The height has been reached. What the Hermit does with it is shown in his raised right hand.

The whole background is deep indigo-blue, scattered with small gold stars and crossed by grey-blue clouds edged in gold. There is no moon and no sun. The lantern is the only near light; the stars are the only far ones.

Indigo is the deep blue of the 1909 scheme pushed toward black: feeling gone quiet, the waters at rest. It is the colour of the hours when the real questions are asked.
