Strength शक्ति

The Strength tarot card means power that has learned to be gentle: the fiercest thing in a life quieted by patience. Card VIII shows a woman in white bending over a tawny lion, her bare hands closing its jaws, a lemniscate above her head, a garland from her waist to the lion's neck, and a distant blue mountain. Upright it is courage, compassion and self-mastery. Reversed, the lion is loose or the hands have withdrawn.

A woman in a long white robe sown with small gold flowers, bending from the waist over the lion, her dark hair bound at the back and crowned with blossoms, her face calm and lowered to the level of the animal's eyes. Waite: a woman is closing the jaws of a lion.

Fortitude. Waite is exact about what kind: the card has nothing to do with self-confidence in the ordinary sense, and concerns instead the confidence of those whose strength is God, who have found their refuge in Him. She is the higher nature in its liberation. The lion is the part of her that needed a gentler owner.

Upright, she is the querent at their most composed: the one who lowers their voice when the room gets loud. Reversed, ask who in the situation is standing over whom, and whether anyone has knelt to the lion's level yet.

Card I, where it floated above a man with four tools and a table. Here there is no table and no tool. The same infinite current, now run through bare hands and a calm breath: skill with instruments has become skill with the self.

When Strength sits in the crown position, the lemniscate is the message: the resource the querent fears running out of is one that renews. Reversed, they are spending it as if it were finite, in bursts, and resting as if rest were theft.

White for purity and red for desire, the two colours of the Magician's garden, now worn on the head. Innocentia inviolata, Waite calls it, inviolate innocence: a purity that has met the lion and kept its colour.

In a question about reputation or honours, the wreath says the recognition will be real and will need tending. Reversed, the flowers have wilted because the querent stopped doing the quiet thing that earned them.

The lion's mouth is open and her two hands are upon it, one above on the muzzle and one below at the jaw, so that the teeth are between her palms. The animal's eyes are turned up to her face. There is no rope, no staff, no blade on the card.

The passions mastered without injury. Waite says the only point in which the design differs from the conventional ones is that her beneficent fortitude has already subdued the lion. The work is done; what we see is the holding. Her hands close the jaws, and the lion lets her.

When a querent asks how to handle a frightening person or habit, read the woman's hands. They rest on the lion's jaw and stay there. Steady contact, kept up day after day, does what one show of force cannot. Reversed, the hands have pulled back or closed into fists, and either way the nerve has gone.

A long garland of red roses and white blossoms with green leaves, worn over one shoulder and around the waist of the white robe, its lower length falling against the lion's mane and neck. Waite says the lion is being led by a chain of flowers, and here it is.

Beauty leads the lion here, and no iron is needed. Discipline that is loved holds better than discipline that is feared, and it is lighter to carry.

If the querent is holding a discipline by willpower alone and hating it, the garland is the correction: find the part of the practice that is beautiful and lead from there. Reversed, the chain has become iron and the lion is pulling against it.

Waite gives one aspect plainly: the lion signifies the passions, and she who is called Strength is the higher nature in its liberation. The lion is also Leo, the card's sign, and the Fire of its element. Nobody has killed or caged it. A life without the lion would have no heat, so the card keeps the animal and changes who leads.

Ask the querent to name their lion: the appetite, the temper, the fear that is largest in the room. Upright, it is standing calmly under their hands; reversed, it is loose, or they have been pretending they do not own one.

When Strength appears in the position of the distant future, the mountain is the promise: the climb is real and it is further off than the querent fears. Attend to the lion this season.

Waite's meanings are power, energy, action, courage and magnanimity, with complete success and honours, and he is careful to add that the card has nothing to do with self-confidence in the ordinary sense. It concerns those whose strength rests in something higher than themselves. In practice that looks like a crisis met calmly, a habit loosened by steady kindness, authority used without raising the voice, a frightening conversation held with open hands. Upside down, the lion is loose or the woman has gone. The other version is weakness and self-doubt, the hands withdrawn from the jaws because the querent has stopped believing they can hold them; discord follows, and sometimes, Waite adds, disgrace.
