A great golden sun fills the top of the card. It has a serene human face that looks straight out at the viewer, eyes open, with a small jewel at the brow. Around it the rays alternate: straight pointed rays and long wavy ones.
Light at its source. For Waite the card marks the passage from the manifest light of this world, which the glorious sun of earth represents, to the light of the world to come. Nothing on this card is reflected or hidden. It is consciousness at noon.
Straight and wavy in turn. Waite notes that older cards distinguish this luminary by chief rays that are waved and salient alternately. A common teaching reads the straight rays as light and the wavy rays as warmth: the sun gives clarity and life together.
Full and frontal, eyes open. On the Moon the face was in profile with lowered eyes, looking down on the unrest below. The Sun looks you in the eye. Directness is the teaching of this card.
Gold on a golden-yellow sky. Yellow in the 1909 scheme is consciousness; here the whole sky has become it.

Say the thing plainly and let it be seen; this light favours openness. If the card is reversed, a cloud has crossed the sun and the sun is still behind it. Wait an hour, then look again.
