The Moon चंद्रमा

The Moon tarot card means walking by reflected light: intuition, dreams and uncertainty, where fears take shapes that daylight would correct. Card XVIII shows a face in a crescent within a golden disc, falling drops, two grey towers, a dog and a wolf baying, a crayfish climbing from a pool and a path winding to the hills. Upright it is the uncertain road walked with care; reversed it is the mist beginning to lift.

What it isयह क्या है

A great golden disc high in the blue night sky, ringed with long and short rays. Within it a crescent, and within the crescent a calm face in profile, eyes lowered, looking down over the whole scene.

Reflected light. The moon has no light of its own; it returns the sun's. Waite calls the card the life of the imagination apart from the life of the spirit, and the light of the mind a reflection beyond which lies a mystery it cannot show. Intuition, feeling and dream are true instruments, yet by this light they give outlines and leave the certainty for morning.

Untroubled. Waite writes that the face of the mind directs a calm gaze upon the unrest below. Whatever stirs on the ground, the presiding mind is at peace. The lesson for the querent: the higher part of you is not afraid, even when the lower part is.

Gold, long and short around the disc. Waite gives the moon sixteen chief and sixteen secondary rays and notes that it is increasing on the side of mercy, to the right of the observer, which is where the crescent sits in this painting.

Waite writes that the dew of thought falls. Something from above descends into the unsettled scene below: insight, nourishment, a quiet influence that settles at night as dew settles on grass. The scene is restless; the gift is not withheld.

Many teachers call these drops yods, after Yod, the smallest Hebrew letter and the first letter of the Divine Name. On the Tower the same shapes fall as flames; on the Moon they fall as dew. Grace in two temperatures.

The drops are help that arrives quietly: a dream, a remark, a memory that returns at the right moment. Upright, receive it. Reversed, notice where help was ignored because it did not come in daylight, and go back for it.

The tamed part of our animal nature, the instinct that has lived beside people and learned their habits. Waite takes the dog and the wolf together as the fears of the natural mind at the place of exit, when there is only reflected light to guide it. The dog is the household mind disturbed at night, barking at what it cannot make out.

Let the dog have its say, then ask whether its alarm fits the facts. Reversed, an old anxiety is losing its voice; let it rest and keep walking.

The untamed part of instinct: hunger, suspicion, the wild reaction that has never been domesticated. Dog and wolf are one kind of creature in two conditions, and that is the teaching. The same energy, civilised in one and wild in the other, answers to the same moon.

Dog and wolf flank the path like guardians at a threshold. To pass between them you need neither to obey them nor to fight them. You need only to keep walking at your own pace.

The wolf is the fear without a name. Upright, watch for reactions out of proportion to what has actually happened. Reversed, the wildness has been acknowledged; give it a safe outlet, such as hard exercise or honest writing.

Waite describes that which comes up out of the deeps: a nameless tendency, lower even than the wild beast, which strives toward manifestation by crawling from the water to the land and, as a rule, sinks back whence it came. It is the earliest stirring of the unconscious, a feeling or memory or impulse not yet formed enough to be named.

It is the first creature on the path. Everything else on the card, dog, wolf, towers, hills, lies ahead of it. The journey of the Moon begins with what rises from below.

In a question about feelings, read the pool: depth is not danger, and moving water is not a flood. Reversed, the waters are settling; this is the time to look into them and see clearly.

For Waite the path between the towers is the issue into the unknown. The way forward exists and can be seen even by moonlight, but it bends, so that no one standing at its start can see its end.

The limits of the known world, the last human-built things before the open country. Between them is a gate without a door. Many teachers link them with the two pillars of the High Priestess and of Justice: the edge of ordinary consciousness, with the passage running between the pair.

In a question about leaving something familiar, the towers are the threshold: the old world ends here. Upright, you are approaching them. Reversed, you have already passed between them; stop looking back for the gate.
