Card II shows a woman seated between a black pillar marked B and a white pillar marked J, a horned crown with a full moon on her head, a scroll marked TORA in her lap and a crescent at her feet. Upright it is inner knowing and patience; reversed, secrets kept badly or surface knowledge.

Reversed, the veil is either torn for show or held up to hide an empty room: depth is claimed and not possessed, or a secret is handled without care. Waite's reversed meanings are passion, moral or physical ardour, conceit and surface knowledge: the quiet of the card replaced by heat, the scroll read from its visible half and announced as the whole. One version is the querent who ignores a clear intuition because it is inconvenient. Another is gossip, a confidence repeated, the veil torn for the pleasure of showing. A third is withdrawal pretending to be wisdom. Each one is mended by going back to the water. What do the letters B and J on the High Priestess's pillars mean?
They stand for Boaz and Jachin, the two bronze pillars at the porch of Solomon's temple, read as strength and establishment. Waite says she sits between the white and black pillars of the mystic Temple. Black and white, J and B, are the two poles of any manifest thing, and the Priestess is the knowledge that sits between them.
