The Magician जादूगर

The Magician tarot card means will directed through skill: taking what is on the table and making something of it. Card I shows a young man behind a table, one hand raising a white wand, the other pointing to the earth, a lemniscate above his head, a serpent belt at his waist, and cup, sword, pentacle and wand laid before him. Upright it is focus and manifestation; reversed, skill scattered or turned to trickery.

A young man in a white robe and a red mantle, standing behind a table, a jewelled band on his brow, dark curls to the shoulder, eyes level and calm. Waite gives him the countenance of divine Apollo, with a smile of confidence and shining eyes.

He stands. Every other crowned or robed figure in the first row of the Major Arcana sits: the Priestess, the Empress, the Emperor, the Hierophant. The Magician alone is on his feet. His authority comes from practice, and practice is done standing.

A short white wand, pale as ivory, with a small knob at each end, held straight up in the right hand so that the arm forms a line from the table to the sky.

The channel. Waite takes the raised wand and the lowered hand together as the descent of grace, virtue and light, drawn from things above and derived to things below. The wand receives its power from above. Open at both ends, it conducts what passes through it.

When the Magician sits in a position about resources, read the wand: the querent is being asked to be a channel and let something pass through. Reversed, the wand is held but nothing flows. Begin a small piece of the work today.

A horizontal figure of eight in deep blue and gold, floating just above the hair like a halo that has been bent into a loop. Waite calls it the mysterious sign of the Holy Spirit, the sign of life, like an endless cord.

Infinity in a working form. The loop has no start and no end, yet it crosses itself at one point, and that crossing is where the Magician stands. Power circulates; the adept is the junction. In a reading it marks a mind that can hold a long view while doing the next small task.

The same sign floats above the woman of Strength, card VIII. The Magician works the infinite through instruments; Strength works it through the body and the breath. The two cards are a pair of lessons on the same current.

In the crown position of the Celtic Cross, the lemniscate is the message: the work in front of you is part of a longer circuit than you can see. Keep the hand on the table anyway.

A green serpent with visible scales and a small head, wound once around the waist of the white robe, its jaws closed on its own tail. Waite calls it a serpent-cincture, the serpent appearing to devour its own tail.

Eternity worn as a belt, which is to say eternity made practical. Waite adds that here it indicates the eternity of attainment in the spirit: what is really learned stays learned. The serpent is also energy held in a closed circuit at the centre of the body, neither spilling nor sleeping.

The belt is where the Magician keeps his power when he is not using it. If a querent's energy leaks into every conversation, teach them the belt: a closed loop at the centre, opened only at the table.

Waite: the symbols of the four Tarot suits, signifying the elements of natural life.

Every resource, in reach. Cup for feeling and relationship, sword for thought and speech, pentacle for body and money, wand for will and work. Waite says they lie like counters before the adept, and he adapts them as he wills. Nothing on the table is missing, and the whole card turns on that.
