A great angel with golden hair, a halo and a jewelled circlet emerges from billowing white clouds in the upper half of the card. The wings are banded in blue and gold; the angel wears a white robe and a blue mantle scattered with gold stars.
The summons from above. Waite calls him the great angel, here encompassed by clouds. He does not weigh, point or pronounce; he calls. The angel's whole act on this card is a sound, and every other figure is an answer to it.
A deep bank of white cloud cradles the angel. The call comes from a level the figures below cannot see; only the sound reaches them, and they rise on the strength of what they hear.
Blue and gold in the wings and mantle. Blue in the 1909 scheme is feeling and the waters, gold is consciousness: the herald carries both down to the sea.
A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot, 1910 (the great angel encompassed by clouds). Golden Dawn: Judgement attributed to Shin and the element Fire. Waite does not name the angel; calling him Gabriel is a long-standing popular custom.
Upright: a message is arriving from beyond your usual view; listen for it in a letter, a conversation, a sudden certainty. Reversed: the message has come and is being argued with; let it finish speaking before you reply.
