न्याय-दिवस (Judgement) टैरो कार्ड का अर्थ है जागृति और नवीनीकरण: एक आह्वान जो अतीत का लेखा माँगता है और जो दबा पड़ा था उसे नए जीवन में उठाता है। बीसवें कार्ड पर बादलों के बीच पंखों वाला महादेवदूत लाल क्रॉस वाले श्वेत ध्वज से सजी तुरही बजा रहा है। नीचे समुद्र पर तैरती खुली शवपेटिकाओं से धूसर आवरण वाली आकृतियाँ हाथ उठाए उठ रही हैं, और पीछे हिमाच्छादित पर्वत हैं। सीधा आने पर यह उत्तर दिया गया आह्वान है, उलटा आने पर ऐसा आह्वान जो सुना गया पर टाल दिया गया।

Judgement tarot card means awakening and renewal: a summons that calls the past to account and raises what was buried into new life. Card XX shows a winged archangel in the clouds blowing a trumpet hung with a white flag and a red cross, and grey-shrouded figures rising with raised arms from open coffins on the sea, snowy mountains beyond. Upright it is the call answered; reversed it is the call heard and deferred.

A great angel with golden hair, a halo and a jewelled circlet emerges from billowing white clouds in the upper half of the card. The wings are banded in blue and gold; the angel wears a white robe and a blue mantle scattered with gold stars.

The summons from above. Waite calls him the great angel, here encompassed by clouds. He does not weigh, point or pronounce; he calls. The angel's whole act on this card is a sound, and every other figure is an answer to it.

A deep bank of white cloud cradles the angel. The call comes from a level the figures below cannot see; only the sound reaches them, and they rise on the strength of what they hear.

The call itself. Waite describes the angel blowing his bannered trumpet. Sound wakes a sleeper before light does, and it reaches every figure on the card at once, near or far. No one is called separately; no one is left out.

When Judgement answers a question about whether to act, read the trumpet: the signal you were waiting for has sounded. Reversed, ask whether you are waiting for a second, louder trumpet that the card does not promise.

Waite notes that the cross is displayed on the banner as usual, in every version of this card. The call carries a sign: the rising is not random, it answers to an order. Many teachers read the cross as the meeting of the vertical and the horizontal, spirit crossing matter, so that the summons reaches down into the physical world.

Waite names a woman, a man and their child among the risen, and observes that all the figures are as one in the wonder, adoration and ecstasy of their attitudes. The woman is the receptive awakening: she looks straight to the source and lets the call fill her.

The active answer. He has already risen to his waist and reaches out with open hands. Where the woman receives the call, the man moves toward it. Many teachers read the pair as the two halves of one soul, the receptive and the active, rising together so that the answer is whole.

Waite places their child between them, whose back is turned. Because we see the child from behind, we see the scene exactly as the child does: looking up at the angel from below. The child is the new life born of the union of the two, and the viewer's own place inside the card.

What was laid to rest is opened: old selves, finished chapters, abilities set aside. Waite notes that on this plate more than three are restored and that he made the variation deliberately. Renewal on this card is not private. Many rise at once, and each from a coffin of their own.

Calm, deep blue, without a wave breaking. The coffins float: feeling and memory hold the past up and keep it from sinking. The waters are still because the call has been heard.

A long range of snow-capped blue mountains runs across the horizon, between the golden sky above and the blue sea below.

The heights still ahead, and the heights where the journey began. The Fool set out among icy peaks like these; at card XX they return on the horizon. The rising figures face them. What began in innocence at the top of the world is now approached again with experience.

When Judgement falls in the future position, look at the mountains: the call leads somewhere higher as well as somewhere new. Reversed, the peaks are hidden by doubt; describe the summit you once wanted, and it will come back into view.

Something you set aside, a gift, a vocation, a relationship, a part of yourself, is summoned back to life, and the summons arrives clearly. Waite calls the card the accomplishment of the great work of transformation in answer to the summons of the Supernal, and adds that the summons is heard and answered from within. His divinatory meanings are change of position, renewal and outcome. In practice it brings a reckoning without condemnation: review the past honestly, forgive what can be forgiven, yourself included, and rise into the next role. Waite gives weakness and faintness of heart for the reversal, and also deliberation, decision and sentence: the matter is under review and the verdict is still unspoken. One form is self-doubt, the call dismissed because you do not feel worthy of it. Another is harsh self-judgement, the past reviewed so severely that no one is allowed to rise from it. A third is plain delay, in the hope that the summons will repeat itself at a more convenient hour. All three answer to one remedy. Write the call down in one sentence, name the single step it asks of you, and take that step before the week ends.
