Violet stands between red and blue, desire and feeling joined in one colour. It is a royal colour, and here it moves as a robe on a dancing body: sovereignty that dances. The trailing scarf draws the line of the movement in the air, so that the dance can be seen even in a still picture.

On the original plate the dancer is unclothed but for a long violet scarf wound about the body. Many commentators read that scarf as veiling the figure's sex, the union of opposites. The painting dresses her fully and keeps the scarf's trailing line.
