A graceful dancer with long dark hair, a gold diadem and jewels floats in the air within the wreath. One arm is raised high, the other lowered; her body turns as if caught in the middle of a step, with no ground beneath her feet.
Completion lived as movement. Waite calls the card the perfection and end of the Cosmos, the secret within it, and the state of the soul in the consciousness of Divine Vision. The dancer is the Fool at the end of the road: the same traveller, now dancing in the air he once stepped off into.
One leg is crossed behind the other. Many teachers note that the posture echoes the Hanged Man, card XII, turned the right way up: what was once suspended by the foot is now free to move.
She stands on nothing. The circle around her holds her up, and the ground below has no part in it. The labour of standing is over; what remains is balance.
A. E. Waite, The Pictorial Key to the Tarot, 1910 (the perfection and end of the Cosmos; the soul in the consciousness of Divine Vision). Golden Dawn: the World attributed to Tav and Saturn. The comparison with the Hanged Man comes from later teachers.
When the World lands upright, the matter is complete; enjoy the finished thing and let it keep moving. Reversed, one step of the dance is missing. Find it and take it, and the circle closes.
