The Wheel of Fortune tarot card means a turning point: a cycle turning by a law larger than luck. Card X shows a great wheel marked T A R O and four Hebrew letters, a sphinx with a sword on top, a serpent descending at the left, a jackal-headed figure rising at the right, and four winged creatures reading in the corners. Upright it is destiny, fortune and change; reversed, resistance to the turn.

A great wheel fills the centre of the card: a broad gold rim, an orange face, eight spokes meeting at a hub, small rosettes between the letters. It hangs in the blue sky with nothing beneath it and nothing holding it. Waite says the symbolic picture stands for the perpetual motion of a fluidic universe and for the flux of human life.

Nothing supports the wheel. It is held in the sky by the order it displays and by nothing else. Fortune does not rest on anything the querent has built; it turns above all that, which is why the card asks for a different kind of steadiness than the Chariot's.

With the wheel upright, the message is that the change is coming from outside the querent's effort and will come anyway; prepare for it and save the pushing. Reversed, ask which quarter of the wheel they are on, and whether they are holding the rim.

The name of the deck is the name of the wheel, and the name of the wheel is the name of the law. The High Priestess held a scroll marked TORA in her lap; here the same letters have been set turning. What she kept still and hidden, the Wheel displays in motion. Every reading is a turn of these four letters.

When the Wheel sits at the heart of a Celtic Cross, read the letters: the matter is governed by a law the querent has not yet named. Upright, ask them to name it; reversed, they are reading the word from the wrong starting point.

Between the four Latin letters, at the diagonals of the rim, stand four Hebrew letters: Yod, Heh, Vav and Heh, the four letters of the Divine Name, so that the two names alternate the whole way round. The turn is not random. The Name is written into the rim, between every letter of the wheel's own name, so that no quarter of fortune is without it. Waite calls this the Divine intention within; the four creatures in the corners are the same intention without. The wheel is watched from inside and from outside.

The Name has four letters and the wheel has four quarters, four creatures and four alchemical signs. The whole card is built on four held in motion, the fixed number turned, which is the Golden Dawn's Jupiter: expansion that keeps its form.

Inside the rim, four of the eight spokes carry a small dark sign at their midpoint, one on each of the upright and horizontal arms. They are commonly identified as the alchemical signs of mercury, sulphur, salt and water, the materials of the Great Work.

On the top of the wheel sits a sphinx painted blue, with a striped headdress and a calm human face, its lion's body at rest and an upright sword held in one paw. It is the only figure on the card that is neither rising nor falling.

Waite: the Sphinx is the equilibrium therein. It sits where the motion is greatest and does not move, and that is the card's whole instruction: stability amidst movement. Waite adds that depicting the sphinx couchant on a pedestal above the wheel defrauds the symbolism, because the essential idea is to be still on the turning thing itself. The sword is discernment, the faculty that tells one quarter of the wheel from another.

Blue, the same blue as the sky it sits against, so that the still figure almost belongs to the background. Equilibrium is quiet; it does not announce itself. On the Chariot the sphinxes were black and white and lay before the driver; here one sphinx, the colour of the sky, sits above everything.

In the position of recent past, the serpent says a descent has happened and was part of the turn. Upright, it is behind the querent; reversed, they are still on the serpent's side and should stop climbing against it and let the bottom come.

One version is the downward arc: a setback, bad timing, a run of luck ending, the serpent's side of the wheel. The other is the querent gripping the rim and refusing to let the season change, so that the same lesson comes round again.
