The Tower मीनार

The Tower tarot card means the collapse of a structure that was never sound: a sudden truth that brings down what pride or habit had built. Card XVI shows a grey tower on a rocky peak struck by lightning, its gold crown knocked loose, flames in three windows and two figures falling into a black sky full of small flames. Upright it is the shock that frees; reversed it is the collapse resisted, delayed, or already survived.

A tall, narrow tower of pale grey stone built on the summit of a bare rock, with pointed-arch windows and a battlemented top. The painting draws its masonry course by course. It is the only straight line in a picture where everything else is falling or flaring.

A structure raised high on a narrow base: a belief, an institution, a reputation, a plan, built on pride. Waite calls the card the ruin of the House of Life when evil has prevailed within it, and above all the rending of a House of Doctrine. The word doctrine carries the teaching. What falls is a system of thought that could not bear weight, and the person who lived in it walks away.

The grey stoneधूसर पत्थर

Grey, in the 1909 colour scheme, is the unformed and the wise; here it is also plainly stone, matter without a living spirit inside it. No door is visible anywhere on the tower. Nothing built without an entrance was built to be lived in.

Upright: a structure in the querent's life is about to be shown as false, and the showing is the gift. Reversed: the querent already knows it is false and is holding it up by hand. Ask what they are tired of defending; that is the tower.

A jagged bolt of solid gold entering from the top right of the sky and striking the summit of the tower at the exact place the crown had rested. It is painted in gold leaf and is the brightest object on the card.

Sudden truth. The bolt comes from outside the structure and from above it: an insight, an event or a sentence that could not be prepared for and cannot be argued with. In the Golden Dawn attribution this is Mars, force that acts in an instant. The lightning illuminates, and in its light the tower is seen for what it was.

When the Tower falls in the near-future position, read the bolt: within weeks something will be said or seen that settles a question for good. Advise the querent to be the one who says it.

The older name for this card was the House of God, and the fallen crown is the moment the house stops claiming to be more than it is. Gold is value and sovereignty. The painting keeps the crown whole as it falls, so whatever had worth survives. It moves from the top of a structure, where it could not be examined, to the ground, where it can.

Reading tipपाठ-संकेत

Ask the querent what they have been crowned with that they did not earn, or what they have crowned another person with. In love readings the crown is usually an idealised image of the partner; the Tower takes the image and leaves the person.

Red and orange are desire and life-force in Smith's scheme. The flame belongs to the tower. It is the energy the structure was built to contain, and it has outgrown the container.

Flames in three windows are a question for the querent: what has been burning quietly for a long time? The Tower rarely announces something new; it announces something old that can no longer be hidden. Reversed, the windows are shuttered and the smoke is still inside.

The people the structure held. Nobody throws them. They are leaving a building that is no longer safe, and the fall is the exit. Both are richly dressed and both are crowned in the painting, which is to say both believed in the tower. In a reading they are the querent and the person, partner or institution who shared the same illusion.

In a relationship reading, two figures falling on opposite sides is the plain picture: both people leave the same false arrangement, and neither is pushed. Reversed, one has jumped and one is still inside; ask the querent which they are.

Many small tongues of flame, shaped like drops, hang in the blue-black sky on both sides of the tower among pale, gold-edged clouds. They drift down slowly, like falling leaves.

If the querent is frightened by the card, count the small flames with them: the picture holds more light in the sky than fire in the tower. The Tower is a dark card and a bright one at the same time, and the reading should be too.

In the foundation position, the Tower's rock is the message: whatever is collapsing above, the base is sound. Have the querent name three things that will still be true a year from now regardless of the outcome; that list is the peak.

In reverse the same collapse appears resisted, delayed, or already survived. In the first form the structure is known to be false and is being held up by hand: a relationship maintained for appearances, a venture kept alive by denial, a belief defended because dropping it feels too costly. Waite's reversed meanings include oppression and imprisonment, the exact feeling of living inside a building you no longer trust. In the second form the fall has already happened and the ground is still shaking. Then patience is the whole task, and rebuilding can wait. Both forms ask for the same thing.
