The Emperor tarot card means authority that holds: structure, protection, discipline and the rule that lets other things grow. Card IV shows a bearded monarch seated squarely on a grey stone throne carved with four rams' heads, an ankh sceptre upright in his right hand, a golden orb in his left, armour under a red robe, and bare orange mountains behind. Upright it is order and sound leadership; reversed, rigidity or control without care.

The beard is white: authority with experience behind it, past the strength of youth. The gaze goes straight to the viewer, and nothing in the card is looked at sideways. Waite adds that his lordship is of thought, and the animal world is beneath it.

Sovereignty that is complete and enclosed. The Empress's crown is a ring of open stars; his is closed over the head. Her rule is a cycle open to the sky; his is a dominion with a roof on it. Waite notes that the Emperor and Empress stand for mundane royalty on the surface, and above this for the higher kingship, occupying the intellectual throne.

In a career position, the crown is the role itself: a promotion, a directorship, responsibility formally conferred. Reversed, the crown is worn by someone who has not earned the beard; read the rest of the spread for who is actually in charge.

Life, held as the instrument of rule. The ankh is the Egyptian sign of life, and the Emperor governs with it where another king might hold a sword. His authority exists to keep things alive, to protect the garden the Empress grows. Test any power the card describes against this: does it preserve life, or only itself?

Aries, the ram, the first sign of the zodiac and the Golden Dawn's attribution for this card. Aries is ruled by Mars: initiative, courage, the force that begins the year. The Emperor sits on that force; it is under him, carved into stone, four times. Raw drive has been built into a seat. That is what maturity does with aggression.

Readiness under ceremony. The Emperor is dressed for court and armed for war at the same time, and the armour stays beneath the robe. A good ruler makes no threats; the capacity to defend is simply there. Red is the colour of life-force and of Mars, the planet that rules his sign, and the whole card is painted in it.

Permanence, and the cost of it. The Empress sits on red cushions in a garden; the Emperor sits on stone in a desert. His seat will outlast him, and it is hard. Waite mentions that he is sometimes shown on a cubic stone, the perfect ashlar of the builders; here the cube has become a throne and kept its hardness. Authority, properly held, is a discipline before it is a privilege.

Behind the throne on both sides rise ranges of bare orange-gold mountains, sharp and treeless, with small shrubs at their feet. Above them the sky is red-orange, streaked with pale cloud, from one edge of the card to the other.

Fire as element and as climate. The Empress's trees and waterfall are gone. This is country of will without softness, where things stand because they were built to stand. The mountains are achievement, hard-won and lasting; the red sky is Mars and the energy of Aries. Nobody here pretends that order is gentle. Order is what makes the garden possible on the other side of these hills.

The Emperor upright is authority that holds. A structure is available to you, or is being asked of you: a role with responsibility, a plan that needs discipline to become real, a boundary that must be drawn and kept. Waite's divinatory meanings are stability, power, protection, realization, a great person, aid, reason, conviction, authority and will. The card favours the long view and the firm hand: budgets, contracts, schedules, rules written down and followed. It can point to a father, a senior man, an institution or the law, usually as help. Decide, and let the decision stand for a season before revisiting it. The garden the Empress grows needs the wall the Emperor builds, and this month you are the builder.

Turned over, the Emperor is structure without the life it was meant to protect. One version is rigidity: rules kept for their own sake, a plan that cannot bend, a man who confuses being obeyed with being right. Another is the small tyrant, controlling a household or a team out of fear. A third is the absent or weak authority, the throne with no one in it, which Waite's reversed list touches with the words obstruction and immaturity. The same list also offers benevolence, compassion and credit, and that is the way back: the Emperor recovers himself when he remembers that the sceptre is an ankh. Loosen one rule that no longer serves anyone, keep the ones that keep people safe, and lead from the front.

Rajadharma, the duty of the ruler, sits close to this card, and so does the Gita's list of the kshatriya's natural work: courage, firmness, resourcefulness and the refusal to flee (18.43). The ankh held as a sceptre meets the old test of danda, the rod of rule, which stays righteous only while it protects. In Jyotish, Aries is Mesha, ruled by Mangala, and its fire is the beginning that the Emperor has seated into stone.
