The Five of Swords tarot card means a victory that costs more than it gains: a quarrel won and goodwill lost. A man with a thin smile holds three swords, two resting against his left shoulder and one in his right hand, while two more lie on the ground and two defeated figures walk away toward the sea under jagged clouds. Upright it is conflict and a hollow win; reversed it is the quarrel laid down and amends begun.

They also see reconciliation, the wish to make amends, or the decision to walk away from a conflict for good. It can also show resentment that lingers after the fighting stops. Finish the matter cleanly. Offer a sincere apology where one is owed, return what was taken, or simply decide that the argument is over and stop rehearsing it in your mind.
