In the Eight of Swords a cloth blinds the woman; here the hands do it. The blindness has moved from outside to inside, and with it the power to lift it: hands can be lowered at will.

Night, and the narrowing of the world that comes with it. In the dark, every concern seems larger and every solution further away. The black wall tells you the hour. It passes no verdict.

No light source is painted, which means the morning is simply not yet in view. The next card of the suit, the Ten, places a band of yellow dawn on the horizon. Read the two together and the black wall becomes a passing hour.

The red of the roses matches the red of the bed. Desire and warmth surround the figure on every side except the one being stared into, the dark wall.
