जहाँ उसका शरीर दाहिनी ओर तलवार की दिशा में है, वहीं उसका सिर तीखे ढंग से बाईं ओर मुड़ा है, आँखें पीछे किसी वस्तु पर टिकी। उसके काले घुँघराले केशों में बँधा हरा फीता पवन में लहराता है।

While his body faces right toward the sword, his head turns sharply to the left, eyes watching something behind him. A green ribbon in his dark curls streams out in the wind.

चौकसी। वेट कहते हैं कि वह इधर-उधर देखता है, मानो किसी विरोधी की प्रतीक्षा में हो। यह उस व्यक्ति की सजगता है जो हर दिशा से सूचना एकत्र करता है, अध्ययन और काम में उपयोगी, पर कभी विश्राम न करे तो थकाने वाली।

Watchfulness. Waite says he looks this way and that, as if expecting an adversary. It is the alertness of someone who gathers information from every direction, useful in study and in work, tiring if it never rests.

शरीर एक ओर जाता है और आँखें दूसरी ओर। यही विभाजन प्यादे की विशेष कठिनाई है: हर वस्तु में रुचि, पर प्रतिबद्धता अभी किसी से नहीं।

The body goes one way and the eyes another. This split is the Page's characteristic difficulty: interest in everything, commitment to nothing yet.

The intellect being taken up. A sword is discernment, the ability to cut true from false. He holds it with both hands because it is still heavy for him; command of the mind comes with practice.

The point rises toward the sky, the home of air. His thinking aims high, toward ideas and principles, even while his eyes are distracted elsewhere.

Thoughts in flight, many and fast. Birds belong to the element of air, and through the swords court they track the state of the mind: a whole flock here, a single bird above the Queen, a pair above the King.

A flock also suggests messages arriving. The Page is traditionally the bearer of news, and the birds overhead are information on the wind, some reliable, some not.

The birds are on the 1909 plate, though Waite does not describe them. Tracing how the birds change across the court cards is a classroom observation from the plates.

Changeable conditions. Waite notes that about his way the clouds are gathered wildly. The air is moving and the situation with it; plans made in this weather need to be flexible.

The clouds are bright. This is the weather of change, lively, unsettled and full of possibility, with no storm in it.

Several slender trees on the slopes to the left and right of the hill, their crowns swept sideways by the wind, branches all leaning the same way.

The force of the element. Air is strong on this card, strong enough to bend living wood. The trees bend and do not break, which is the right response to a strong wind and to strong opinions.

Their leaves are full and green. Growth continues in a windy season; learning, too, happens best when ideas are moving.

A vantage point. Waite says he is passing over rugged land. The Page has climbed high enough to see far, which suits a mind that wants the overview; the ground is uneven, so footing still matters.

The Golden Dawn pairs the Page with earth within the suit of air. The hill is that earth: the ground an idea needs if it is to become something practical.
