The Hanged Man tarot card means a pause chosen on purpose: the world seen the other way up until something new is understood. Card XII shows a young man hanging by his right ankle from the crossbar of a living, leafy tree, his free leg bent behind the other to form a cross, his hands behind his back and a bright halo around his head. Upright it is surrender, suspension and a new perspective; reversed it is the same pause turned into stalling, or a sacrifice that serves no one.

The one point of attachment. A single ankle holds him. His neck and hands are untouched, so nothing about the binding stops him breathing or thinking. One commitment holds the whole position. In a reading, the ankle is the one thing the querent has agreed not to move, and the question is whether that agreement is still wise.

Blue is emotion and the waters; red is desire and life-force; yellow is consciousness. The body is dressed in feeling, the legs in vital energy, the feet, which are now uppermost, in mind. Turned over, the order of the Fool is reversed: consciousness is on top, feeling nearest the ground. That is what a new perspective looks like when it is painted.

One is stalling: a wait that has stopped teaching anything and has become a way of avoiding the decision, the figure still hanging long after the lesson was learned. The other is the martyr: a sacrifice made for an audience, suffering displayed to extract something from others.
