A knight in full armour sits his black horse without moving, a coin held out on one gauntleted hand: progress you can count on. The work need not be exciting. It needs to be done properly, every day, until it is finished. Waite gives utility, serviceableness, interest, responsibility and rectitude, all on the normal and external plane, which makes this a card of ordinary duty done well. It favours long projects, steady jobs, savings plans kept, promises honoured, and the people who can be relied upon. The horse is heavy and the pace is slow. Accept that pace, keep the coin in use, and measure success by what gets completed. A quick start counts for little here.

Reversed, his steadiness has stopped moving. Waite's reversed meanings are inertia, idleness, repose of that kind, stagnation, and also placidity, discouragement and carelessness. The horse that stood ready now simply stands. Later practice also finds perfectionism that delays, routine kept out of fear of change, or a person so cautious that nothing is attempted. The virtues are intact beneath the stillness. Restart the motion deliberately: choose one task that has been waiting, give it a fixed time tomorrow, finish it, and then make one small change to the routine so that the road ahead feels like a road again.

His steadiness recalls the Gita's sattvic dhriti, the firmness that holds mind and senses to their task. His reversal is the drift into tamas, where rest becomes inertia.
