The King of Pentacles tarot card means prosperity mastered and wisely governed. A crowned king sits on a throne carved with bull heads, his robe covered in grapes and vines, a sceptre in his right hand and a pentacle under his left; an armoured foot rests on a boar's head and a castle rises behind. Upright it is abundance, business sense and steady leadership; reversed it is wealth turned to greed or control.

Reversed, the vines and the gold are still there, but the king's mastery has lost its direction. Waite's reversed list is severe: vice, weakness, ugliness, perversity, corruption and peril. In plainer terms, the king's gifts are turned to the wrong ends: wealth pursued for status, shortcuts in business, control exercised through money, or the lethargy Waite noticed in his face hardening into complacency. In current practice it can also describe a provider who measures love by what he pays for. The competence is still there.
