The Lovers प्रेमी

The Lovers tarot card means a union chosen freely and witnessed from above. Card VI shows a woman and a man beneath a great red-winged angel, a blazing sun at the top, a serpent-twined fruit tree behind her, a tree of twelve flames behind him, and a single blue mountain between. Upright it is love, attraction and a choice rightly made; reversed, a bond out of tune or a choice avoided.

A young woman at the left in a pale ivory drape bordered with gold, a small wreath of leaves in her dark hair, her right arm extended toward the man with the palm open, her eyes raised to the angel above. Waite calls the pair Adam and Eve when they first occupied the paradise of the earthly body.

Waite is careful here: the woman signifies the attraction toward the sensitive life that carries within it the idea of the Fall, yet he will not call her a conscious temptress. She is the working of a secret law of Providence, and only through her can the man complete himself.

She is the only figure on the card who looks at the angel. He looks at her; she looks at heaven; the line of sight climbs from the earth through love to spirit. In a reading she is the partner, or the part of oneself, that keeps the higher purpose in view.

Neither figure grips. Both hands are open and the fingertips nearly meet across the base of the mountain. Love on this card is offered with an open palm, and the small gap between the hands is the choice still being made.

The witness and the blessing. Love that is more than appetite always has a third party present: the higher law under which two people agree. The angel touches neither of them. It gives, and it leaves them free, which is the whole difference between a vow and a possession.

Violet for the authority of spirit, red wings for the warmth and will that carry it down, gold at the hair and halo for the sun it stands beneath. The angel wears the same red the man's flame tree burns with; the blessing and the passion are one colour at different heights.

Waite leaves the angel unnamed. Calling him Raphael, the healing archangel, is a later teachers' identification, and a useful one in class.

In the crown position of the Celtic Cross, the angel is the message: the best outcome is a choice made under a higher witness. Reversed, the blessing is withheld because the choice has not been raised to the level where it can be blessed.

Behind the woman stands a tree hung with round red fruit, and up its trunk from the roots into the branches winds a blue-green serpent, its head raised among the leaves. Waite names it the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, with the serpent twining round it.

Red fruit against dark green leaves. Red is desire in the 1909 scheme; the fruit of knowledge is sweet before it is heavy. The serpent's cool blue-green is the same family as the mountain: knowledge and difficulty share a hue.

When the Lovers falls in a position about obstacles, read the serpent: the difficulty is something one partner knows and has not said. Upright it is harmless once spoken; reversed it has already climbed into the branches.

Later commentators read the twelve flames as the twelve signs of the zodiac, the full circle of human temperament. Twelve also crowns the Empress with stars. On this card it says the whole range of desire is present and none of it is hidden.

When the Lovers appears in the near future, the mountain is the practical message: the choice is coming and so is the climb that follows it. Upright, climb together; reversed, one partner is climbing alone.

Financial decisions that involve another person: a joint purchase, a shared loan, a partner's income entering the household plan. The Lovers favours agreement before arithmetic; two people who have chosen the same future will find the numbers, and two who have not will quarrel over any numbers at all. It is a good card for a decision between two offers when the values behind each are written down and compared honestly.
