The Eight of Pentacles tarot card means skill built by patient repetition: the apprentice becoming a master piece by piece. A craftsman sits on a bench cutting a pentacle with hammer and chisel; six finished discs hang on the post beside him, one leans at its foot, and a town stands far off at the left. Upright it is diligent work and learning; reversed it is effort without care, or skill turned to vanity.

In a career reading, the post is the body of finished work. Ask the querent what they have completed; intentions come later. Reversed, the post becomes a shelf of trophies, admired and never added to.

A young craftsman sits at his bench with mallet and chisel, cutting a star into a disc, while six finished discs hang on the post beside him. Skill is being earned here the slow way. A trade is being learned, a body of work is growing, and the reward comes from repetition. Waite gives work, employment and commission, with skill in craft and business, perhaps still in the preparatory stage. That last phrase matters: this is the apprenticeship, and the exhibition comes later. The card favours courses, training, a new job that will teach you, and the plain satisfaction of doing a thing correctly. Keep the town behind you for now. Eight of Pentacles reversed meaning

Reversed, the craftsman's attention drifts from the disc and the effort loses its care. The hours may still be spent, but grudgingly, or the craft has tipped into perfectionism, one disc recut until nothing is finished. Waite's reversed reading is sharper: voided ambition, vanity and greed, and skill turned to cunning and intrigue, the ingenious mind put to the wrong use. Many readers now also see burnout from repetitive work here. The skill itself survives all of this. Lower the stakes and raise the attention: choose one small piece, set a fixed hour, finish it plainly, and let the work be the measure again, with reputation left out of the count.

The Gita calls yoga skill in action (2.50), and the craftsman at his bench is a picture of it, work made exact by attention. Patanjali's Yoga Sutras say practice becomes firmly grounded when kept up over a long time, without interruption and with devotion (1.14).
