The Katha Upanishad tells of Nachiketa, who refused the riches and pleasures Yama offered him in order to ask about what lies beyond death. His refusal came from viveka, discernment. A reader learns to tell the two apart: true detachment looks up and asks a deeper question, while dullness only looks down.
