Waite gives the reversed card two faces. One is swift dispatch, achievement and an end: a matter concluded quickly, perhaps sooner than the querent expected. The other is excess in physical enjoyment and the pleasures of the senses. Modern readers add a third, a circle divided by gossip, rivalry or a friend who has drifted away. In each case the dance has lost its measure. Bring the cups back to the centre. Celebrate what has really finished, set limits on indulgence, and speak to the friend directly, where gossip would speak about them.
