An interpretive parallel between two traditions, offered as a teaching aid. It is not a scriptural citation, and neither tradition is said to describe the other.
The seven floating cups picture maya, the power that makes appearances seem solid. The Gita contrasts the resolute intellect, which is one-pointed, with the scattered minds of the irresolute, whose branches are endless (2.41). The Yoga Sutras name vikalpa, imagination that has no object behind it, among the movements of the mind to be stilled. Viveka, discernment, is the faculty the card calls for, and the reversed card's will and project resemble sankalpa, one resolve held firmly.

As painted: a head crowned with flowers, a veiled glowing figure, a snake, a castle tower, a heap of jewels, a laurel wreath above a cup marked with a skull, and a dragon. Waite does not interpret them one by one; teachers read them as love, spirit, temptation, security, wealth, fame and fear.
