The Eight of Swords tarot card means a confinement that is more of the mind than of the world. A woman in a red robe stands bound and blindfolded on wet ground, eight swords planted around her, three on one side and five on the other, with a castle on a cliff behind. Upright it is feeling trapped by one's own reading of events; reversed it is the blindfold loosening and the first step out.

Limited perception. The swords suit is the suit of thought, and here thought has been cut off from evidence. She cannot see that the way ahead is open, so she concludes it is not. The cloth is the assumption that has not been checked.

The card does not say. Some readings place the binding on another person, some on circumstance, some on the woman herself. A useful teaching question is whether she could remove it if her hands were free, and whether her hands are really bound at all.

Count the swords aloud with the querent and give each a name. Upright, eight fears feel like one wall; reversed, naming them has already broken the wall into eight smaller objects, each of which can be walked past.
