The Two of Swords tarot card means a balance deliberately held: a truce, a guarded peace, or a decision kept in suspension. A blindfolded woman in a white robe sits on a stone bench with two long swords crossed over her chest, a crescent moon above and a sea of rocky islands behind her. Upright it shows poise and a peace that holds for now. Reversed, the balance breaks, or a hidden truth surfaces.

Two forces are equal for the moment: two offers, two loyalties, two people, two versions of the truth. Waite gives conformity, courage, friendship and concord in a state of arms, and another reading he records gives tenderness and intimacy. Turned over, the balance gives way. Waite gives imposture, falsehood, duplicity and disloyalty: something in the situation is not what it presents itself to be, or someone, perhaps the querent, has been less than open. It can also show a stalemate breaking under pressure, with the choice now forced on you. Both versions leave you room to act. Take off the blindfold yourself. Ask directly for the facts that have been withheld, admit to yourself the preference you already have, and choose while you still have room to choose well.

Patanjali's Yoga Sutras describe pratyahara, the withdrawal of the senses that steadies the mind before concentration, and the blindfold pictures it. The two swords are dvandva, the pairs of opposites, which the Gita asks the seeker to rise above; balancing them is only the first step. The parallel warns as well as consoles. Withdrawal prepares for a decision, and the decision still has to be made.
