The Three of Swords tarot card means heartbreak and grief: a painful truth that has to be felt before it can heal. A large red heart is pierced by three swords from above, against a grey sky of heavy cloud and falling rain, with no figure anywhere on the card. Upright it brings sorrow, separation and honest tears. Reversed, the storm is beginning to pass, or grief has been held too long.

A single heart, drawn in the stylised shape of a valentine, fills the centre of the card. It is deep red, outlined in gold, and floats in the air with nothing to hold it.

Three swords drive down into a red heart while rain falls from a grey sky, and no person appears anywhere on the card. This is heartbreak: a separation, a betrayal discovered, a loss, or a truth that hurts to hear. Waite gives removal, absence, delay, division and rupture, and says the picture explains itself. Courage here means letting the sorrow be what it is. Name it, speak it to someone you trust, and allow the tears. Pain that is acknowledged moves through, and pain that is denied lingers. Nothing on the card is fixed: the swords pass through the heart, the clouds are moving and the rain is falling so that the sky can clear.

The storm begins to pass when this card falls reversed. Recovery has started, forgiveness has become imaginable, and the worst of the pain is behind you. It can also show sorrow held for too long, or the confusion and scattered attention that follow a loss; Waite's reversed reading lists error, loss, distraction, disorder and confusion. Both versions point the same way. Let the wound close and stop reopening it each day, put the thoughts that keep circling down on paper, and return gently to one ordinary routine. If the sorrow stays heavy, speak with someone qualified to help. Asking for support is part of healing.

The Gita itself begins in grief. Its first chapter is Arjuna's vishada, and the whole teaching grows out of a heart overwhelmed. In 2.14 Krishna says that the contacts which bring cold and heat, pleasure and pain, come and go and are impermanent, and asks for titiksha, patient endurance. The Three of Swords gives the same counsel: the sorrow is real, and it passes.
