The Four of Swords tarot card means rest after strife: a deliberate retreat so that mind and body can recover. A knight lies in effigy on a stone tomb with his hands joined in prayer, three swords hanging on the wall above him, a fourth carved along the side of the tomb, and a stained-glass window of a woman and child at the upper left. Upright it is rest and contemplation; reversed it is the return to activity, or rest refused.

The Four of Swords upright is rest after strife. A knight lies on his tomb with his hands joined in prayer; three swords hang above him and a fourth lies along the bier. A hard stretch has worn the mind down, and the card asks for a deliberate pause before the next effort. Waite's words (vigilance, retreat, solitude, the hermit's repose) all describe withdrawal. Take yours on purpose: a day off that stays off, an evening without screens, an hour of prayer, an early night. The swords stay in the room. You will pick them up again, rested.

Turned over, the card shows the knight beginning to rise, or a knight who will not lie down at all. Waite's reversed meanings are wise administration, circumspection, economy and precaution, along with avarice: careful management of resources that can tip into holding on too tightly. Readers today often see restlessness here, burnout from refusing to stop, or a return to activity after a retreat. If you have been resting, come back gradually and keep a daily hour of stillness. If you have not rested at all, take the pause now, while the choice is still yours.
