The Eight of Wands tarot card means speed: matters long in preparation are now in motion and close to arriving. The plate shows leafing wands flying in parallel across a deep blue sky, angled down toward a green country with a hill, a small house and a river, and no human figure anywhere. Upright it is momentum, news and swift progress; reversed it is delay, crossed signals or haste that scatters its aim.

Long wands enter from the left edge of the painting and cross it in strict parallel, each one ornamented along its length with small flowers and ringed with gold bands. Nobody holds, throws or catches them. The painting gathers them in two loose bands with open sky between.

Eight flowering wands fly in parallel across an empty sky, sloping down toward a house on a green hill. The waiting is over. What you set in motion earlier, the application, the proposal, the trip, the conversation, is now moving fast and will arrive soon. Waite gives activity in undertakings, great haste and great hope, speed toward an end that promises happiness. No figure appears on the card because no further effort of will is needed; the work is in transit. Your task is to be ready to receive: keep the phone on, keep the bag packed, answer quickly. When the wands break formation, momentum is interrupted or misdirected. A reply is late, a trip is postponed, plans run into each other, or energy rushes out in several directions and hits nothing. Waite's reversed meanings turn the arrows inward: jealousy, disputes, pangs of conscience, and quarrels at home. Often the cause is impatience, with messages sent in haste and read in haste. Restore the formation. Choose the one matter that most needs to land, give it a clear message and a clear date, and let the others wait. Calm the household before you send anything further. Speed returns once the aim is single.
