Turn the card and the grip is disturbed. Waite gives suspense, delay and opposition: a matter of property or money held up, a transaction resisted, an inheritance in dispute. Later readers add two opposite movements. In one, the holder loosens willingly and becomes generous after a long season of caution. In the other, fear of loss tightens into possessiveness, or the coins slip away through neglect. The neighbouring cards and the question decide which. Either way the answer is the same deliberate act: list what you hold, decide what really needs protecting, and release one thing that no longer serves, such as an item, a debt forgiven or a rule.

An interpretive parallel between two traditions, offered as a teaching aid. It is not a scriptural citation, and neither tradition is said to describe the other.
Aparigraha, non-grasping, is one of the five yamas listed in the Yoga Sutras (2.30). The king on this card has gathered well and now clutches, and the yama asks for possession without the clutch. Indian teaching also names lobha, greed, as a binding force, and it honours rightful stewardship of artha.

Why does the man on the Four of Pentacles have a coin on his head and under his feet?
The plate places one pentacle over his crown, one clasped at his chest and one under each foot. Read together, they show possessions governing his thought, his heart and his footing, so that he cannot move without releasing one.
