The guide
When to use this spread
Lay this spread on your birthday or within a few days of it. It covers your own year, from this birthday to the next, so it suits a reflective reading about the person you are becoming more than a plan for the calendar. Many people make it a yearly habit and keep the pages together, and after three or four birthdays the pages start to show patterns no single reading could. For a month-by-month forecast of the calendar year, use the year ahead spread in late December. For one decision you face this year, the decision spread will be sharper.

How to lay it out
Lay the lesson of the year past at the left edge, as the year you are leaving. In the middle, lay the gift with the challenge directly below it, since the two belong together. To the right of that pair, lay the ally on top and the focus beneath. Last, lay the card of the year alone at the far right, a little apart, facing into the year ahead. Read from left to right and the spread runs like the year itself, from what is behind you to the card that names what is coming.
What each position asks
1
The lesson of the year past बीते वर्ष की सीख
This card looks back over the twelve months that end on your birthday. Read it as a lesson already paid for: what the year taught and what is worth carrying forward. A hard card here is often good news, because its hardest part is behind you.
2
The gift उपहार
What the coming year offers you freely, whether a talent, a person or a turn of circumstance. It sits above the challenge because the year usually hands you the gift so that you can meet the challenge. Look for an element or a number the two cards share.
3
The challenge चुनौती
What will test you between this birthday and the next. Read it as the place you will grow, and look to the gift directly above it for the means. A reversed card here usually points to a habit of your own more than to anything outside you.
4
The ally सहायक
Someone or something you can lean on this year. A court card here often describes an actual person, recognised by temperament more than by age or gender. A numbered card describes a habit or a circumstance that helps.
5
The focus केंद्र
Where to put your attention when the year gets crowded. This is the card to copy onto the first page of your diary. It sits beneath the ally because help is easiest to use when your attention is already in the right place.
6
The card of the year वर्ष का कार्ड
The card that names your year from this birthday to the next, read last and used as the lens for the other five. It is drawn, so it can be any of the 78. Paid members can set it beside the year card on their /profile, which the site works out from the birth date and the calendar year and which is always a Major.
One reading, start to finish
A worked example
A 50-year-old school librarian in Chandigarh, reading on her birthday in August, a few weeks after her younger son left home for university.
"What is the year from this birthday to the next asking of me?"
A man in a red cloak climbs away from eight cups stacked in two rows, staff in hand, under a moon with a dark crescent across its face. In the year now closing she gave up the evening tuition she had run from her home for twelve years. The classes still worked; they no longer answered anything in her. Waite reads the discovery that something thought important is of slight consequence, and the figure leaves his cups standing. Her lesson is that she can close a chapter with respect and walk on without breaking anything behind her.
The queen sits under an arch of roses with a pentacle cradled in her lap, a rabbit in the grass at her feet and mountains beyond. Her gift for the year is the queen's own: the care she has always given a household, now with the time and the security to turn some of it toward herself. Queens are Water in TarotPandit's court scheme, so this is feeling given a practical form. The house is quieter, and the garden is hers to tend.
Five young men swing staves at each other on an open meadow, and no one is winning. Reversed, modern practice reads conflict avoided, tension swallowed until it festers. With both sons gone, she and her husband will have to agree afresh on how the house runs, and the small disagreements will be easy to leave unspoken. The challenge is to bring them into the open one at a time and settle each by fair discussion, so that none of them hardens into a quarrel.
A young man on the shore looks with a mild face at a fish lifting its head out of his cup. Pages are Earth here, so this is feeling that wants a body. Her ally may be a younger colleague at the school who brings her a strange, warm idea, or her own curiosity about something she has never tried. Waite speaks of a studious youth who will render service. She should say yes to the odd invitation.
A young man dances with two pentacles bound in a figure-of-eight ribbon while ships pitch on high waves behind him. Reversed, the juggling has outrun the juggler. Her free evenings will fill quickly with committees and favours if she lets them, and a cheerful face can hide real strain. Her focus is one honest count: list every obligation and set one down, telling the people it affects.
A woman kneels at a pool beneath one great star and seven smaller ones, pouring one jug into the water and the other onto the land. The Star follows the Tower in the sequence and often comes after a long strain, here the strain of a house emptying. Waite records a reading of hope and bright prospects. The card asks her to pour freely again, onto her own ground as well as into other people.
Synthesis
Look at the suits first. Two Cups and two Pentacles hold the spread together: the Eight and the Page of Cups on the side of feeling, the Queen and the Two of Pentacles on the side of time and means. Now look at the Star's two jugs, one emptied into the pool and one onto the land. The card of the year draws the same pair, water and earth, and asks her to pour into both.
The gift and the focus are both Pentacles, and they tell a small story between them. The Queen manages a household calmly from her bower. The reversed Two scrambles on one foot. The focus card shows what happens when she forgets her gift and says yes to everything.
The only Fire in the spread is the challenge, five crossed wands in a field of Water and Earth. That is why the challenge will feel out of character for her: quarrels are not her habit, and avoiding them is. The Page of Cups, her ally, offers the softer way in, one honest feeling spoken at a time.
There is one Major, and it sits where it should, in the card of the year.
The plain answer: this year asks her to turn the care she gives others toward her own life, and to speak small disagreements before they gather. Her first step, this week, is to write down every regular commitment she holds and choose one to set down. The freed evening goes to something she has never tried.
Before you lay it
Common mistakes
Laying the spread weeks after the birthday, when the year has already begun to answer. Lay it on the day or within a few days of it, and date the page.
Reading the gift and the challenge as two unrelated cards. Read them as a pair and ask how the gift equips you for the challenge.
Assuming the card of the year matters only if it is a Major. A Minor names a practical, everyday lesson, so give it the same weight and read its full card page.
Taking the lesson of the year past as a verdict on yourself. Treat it as tuition already paid, and write down one thing you will do differently this year.
Premium
The Birthday spread spread and every other spread, unlimited
Do I have to do a birthday tarot spread on my exact birthday?
The day itself is best, and the few days around it serve well. Once a week or two has passed, the year has started to answer and the reading turns into a review. If you missed the day, lay it anyway and read the first weeks as already under way.
How is the card of the year in the birthday spread different from my year card?
The year card on your /profile is worked out from your birth date and the calendar year, changes each January and is always a Major. The card of the year in this spread is drawn for the year from one birthday to the next, so it can be any card in the deck. When the two agree in element or theme, the year is making its point twice.
Can I read the birthday spread for someone else?
Yes, on or near their birthday and with their agreement. Let them shuffle if they are present, and spend most of the conversation on the gift and the challenge, which is where people usually recognise themselves.
How does the Birthday spread spread work?
You ask your question, shuffle, and choose 6 cards. Each card is read in its position, then the reading closes with a synthesis that joins them.
Is the reading free?
Today's card, yes or no, past-present-future and the Celtic Cross are free, three readings a day without an account. The other spreads are part of Premium.
What does a reversed card mean?
A reversed card is the same energy turned inward, delayed or asked for differently. TarotPandit never reads it as a closed door: every reversal names a step.
Are the readings in Hindi?
Every reading comes in English and Hindi. Use the language button to choose which leads.
